Ideas create consequences. Literature reflects the ideas in the culture surrounding the author. Classics also affect the cultures which develop after the author is gone. Students in this course are exposed to the great writings of Ancient History. We focus on thoughtful reading and analysis. Those who participate, develop proficiency in all four levels of reading and analysis of literature. Students discover the correlation between experience, ideas and point of view. They also discover how literature affects culture. They learn that good reading involves finding thematic patterns and insightful connections, as they develop these skills.

BALM Institute literature classes are a multi-level program of extensive interaction between Instructors and a learning cohort of students. Integral to this format is a substantial meta-cognitive dialogue about the written works in group, and follow-up discussions with fellow students online. Students will discover the correlation between experience, ideas and point of view. We practice analysis in a generative learning environment each week. Students also have the opportunity to benefit from videos and other presentations, commentary, and discussions, as well as feedback, accountability, and recordkeeping, online.
